Charity and Community Service
At Harrow Hong Kong, we consider charitable and community service as a fundamental principle of our pupils’ leadership education.
The School provides pupils with many opportunities to work selflessly for the betterment of others, to nurture compassionate leaders. There is an expectation that pupils demonstrate a willingness to give their time and effort to benefit another individual or group, without expectation of reward or return.
At Harrow Hong Kong, the pupils and Houses have great ownership on their charity fundraising. Each Prep School House is paired up with a Senior House, and pupils nominate and vote for their House charity for the following academic year. Each House pairing has a fundraising focus which includes humanitarian, environmental and animal, local and international charities. Each House also donates a percentage of its fundraising to our permanent School charity, The Crossroads Foundation.
Another of the events organised throughout the year is a charitable tradition adopted from Harrow School in the UK, which also takes place at Harrow Hong Kong, the Long Ducker.
A Drop of Life is a Hong Kong registered NGO that strives to ensure the access to clean water and sanitation a reality for everyone. Following the mandate of “passing our love and working for love”, A Drop of Life takes the leads to implement sustainable water projects and build water facilities in Nepal, Cambodia, and China. In Hong Kong, we show our love and concern to disadvantaged groups by organizing charity visits and gift-giving activities.

Founded in 1995 by Malcolm and Sally Begbie, Crossroads Foundation is a non-profit charity based in Hong Kong which aims to connect those with resources with those who need them, providing valuable intersection. Harrow Hong Kong has formed a special partnership with Crossroads, our permanent school charity. Not only does a certain percentage of the fundraising collected also go to Crossroads each year, but we also have developed our relationship through weekly SCAs and other activities.
Over the last few years, the programme has developed. Whilst initially only one group of pupils visited Crossroads for one season a week, we have now developed several Super Curricular Activities working with Crossroads. Pupils are given the opportunity of developing different skills while applying their knowledge with compassion through these SCAs on a weekly basis.
In Crossroads Volunteering, pupils volunteer in different departments at Crossroads. Pupils are engaged in tailored projects within the department for a minimum of one term. Practical skills learnt include bike fixing, electronics, computing, and bulk-collection of clothes, books and other recycling. Also, in Hong Kong Distribution, the pupils have used software to dispatch items and keep a log of items in their inventory. This then allows them to be distributed to other areas. In Prep School, the Crossroads Recycling SCA collects recyclable materials from Harrow and taken these to Crossroads to process each week.
Not only do we hold these SCAs, but our pupils also regularly sell items form the Crossroads Global Handicrafts store at school events, such as Carols by Candlelight. We are proud of the relationship that we have established with Crossroads and look forward to strengthening this relationship even further in the future.

The mission at the Hong Kong Shark Foundation is to raise awareness about shark conservation and the urgent need to stop the unsustainable consumption of ALL shark products, particularly shark fins. We engage youth, individuals and companies on meaningful ways to save the world’s sharks, starting from tackling the consumption of shark products in our daily lives.
With over 50% of the world’s shark fin being traded through Hong Kong alone, we have a rare opportunity through our local efforts to make a significant impact on a global scale.
